Resources or Materials Needed: Assessment half sheet (see appendix B), Clifford book and Dex Heart of a Hero

Step 2: Content Presentation: Teacher follows the I do approach and reads a Clifford book with the students. The teacher then shows the students how they can write down the character and show text evidence by writing down the page number where they found the who (character). Students then follow the we do approach and read Dex Heart of a Hero and fill out the half sheet formative assessment on their own.

Step 3: Learner Participation: Students read Clifford with the teacher and watch how she fills out the assessment form. Students then read Dex Heart of a Hero and fill out the form on their own.

Step 4: Assessment: Students complete assessment form on their own for the teacher to check understanding (appendix B).

Who – The character in the story is ________________.

Text Evidence - I know that because I read it on pg.________.

Step 5: Follow-Through Activities: Students can practice finding the who and proving it with text evidence during independent reading time. Students can practice writing down on a sticky note.
